PSSM Assessments – broken into a Theory and a Practical internal assessment. The practical is formal, two song performances performed privately for a PSSM judge. Judges evaluate performers based on a broad spectrum of musical skills exhibited. The theory is a written test broken into 5 levels of testing.

PSSM Assessment participants are typically capable of reading music, as well as performing independently of coaching and assistance.  Total performance time of two combined pieces cannot exceed five minutes, so that judges can annotate score sheets and provide other feedback. Judges’ comments are geared toward recognizing positive aspects of performances and to encourage the participant’s future musical growth and development.

Families members are welcome to come to the studio on Assessment day, but will not be able to view student’s performances before the judge. All performers earn medals, with superior participants earning trophies. Top Practical Assessment performers are recommended for the annual Advanced Recital.

There is a $10 fee for Assessment participation.

abrsm

ABRSM - The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music’ was founded in 1889 as the outcome of a proposition by Sir Alexander MacKenzie, principal of the Royal Academy of Music, to Sir George Grove, director of the Royal College of Music, that their two pre-eminent musical training institutions unite to create an examining body ‘inspired by disinterested motives for the benefit of musical education... which would genuinely provide a stimulus and an objective for a high standard of achievement’.

ABRSM, the world’s foremost authority on musical ability assessment, provides music teachers and their students with exams and assessments that nurture and evaluate an individual's performance and progress. ABRSM’s consistent and rigorous approach carries recognized international authority.

ABRSM exams are not covered by your regular monthly tuition. Please see www.abrsm.org for fee schedules and exam dates. Please note that in order to sign up through PSSM, you must turn in consent forms on or before the PSSM established ABRSM deadline.
